In our exhibition Edvard Munch Horizons looks at Edvard Munch in a time of great changes, when social and political questions, class struggle and social exclusion were high up on many artists’ agendas.
In this exhibition tour, students will examine artworks from the 1880s to the 1950s, and get an insight into the major currents in Norwegian and European art in the age of modernism. Here, Munch’s art is juxtaposed with works by many other artists, who all variously explored modern society and found new ways of representing reality. In the company of an art educator, students will discuss how the issues of the day are expressed in the work of Munch and other Norwegian artists such as Reidar Aulie, Arne Ekeland and Teddy Røwde, as well as European artists like Asger Jorn, Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Else Alfelt.
We place a strong emphasis on students taking an active part in the exhibition tour, creating space for discussion and the students’ own reflections.
