When volume 2 begins, 38-year-old Munch is on the brink of a personal crisis that culminated in a dramatic breakdown in 1908. At the same time, he experienced rising fame and recognition that over the years secured him a supreme position in Scandinavia and Germany. Yet despite his star status, he is often viewed as an outsider and somewhat lonely figure.
Did Munch ever find his place in his time, and if so, what place was that? How did he handle being an aging avant-gardist among young, radical artists? And how enjoyable was it really to be a ‘Germanic master’ in Germany after Hitler came to power?
