For the past several years, Joel Ross has been refining a new form of jazz that’s true to his sound and his generation. In 2019 and 2020, the vibraphonist-composer released his anticipated Blue Note albums KingMaker and Who Are You? to critical acclaim. With the release of The Parable of the Poet (Blue Note, 2022), Ross shares the results of a year-long exercise in experimenting and risk-taking on and off the bandstand.
The Parable of the Poet is an expansive album-length suite which embodies Ross’s collaborative spirit and finds him exploring new territory. Ross’s musical vision is explicit and mysterious. His song titles refer to various emotional experiences. At MUNCH he appears with his touring quartet, promising a night of soulful and deeply involving modern jazz.
