Saxophonist and bandleader Marthe Lea has over the last few years distinguished herself as a strong voice on the Norwegian jazz and improvisation scene. Here she brings her own quintet – the Marthe Lea Band, an improvising quintet consisting of Andreas Røysum on clarinet, Hans P. Kjorstad on fiddle, Egil Kalman on bass, and Hans Hulbækmo on drums.
The band is clearly inspired by folk traditions from around the world. She relates that the music they play ‘imitates life without inhibitions’. The band aims to share the joy of music and create new experiences in the heat of the moment. The result is a sound that is porous, energetic, and genre defying.
Marthe Lea registered on the radar as a young member of Bugge Wesseltoft’s New Conception of Jazz. Since then, she has taken part is several exciting projects such as Paal Nilssen-Love’s Sun and Steel, Andreas Røysum Ensemble, and Pakten. She has also just released her trio album Bayou with Ayumi Tanaka and Thomas Strønen on ECM, as well as the Marthe Lea Band album Asura.
