Jennifer Torrence: Idin Samimi Mofakham 4C2 (World premiere)
PRAED (World premiere)
Tonight's first world premiere is inspired by mathematical equations. Iranian composer, Idin Samimi Mofakham, has developed his own musical language based on medieval tuning systems. The form and rhythm are derived from mathematical ratios that describe the micro-intervals in Persian classical music. The different combinations you get if you have four elements, and choose two at a time, are examined based on a single equation. The result is a complex and polyrhythmic sonic narrative for percussive sounds, masterfully performed by Jennifer Torrence.
The festival ends with a bang. Lebanese PRAED offers an Arab avant-garde party where the dance music Shaabi and other psychedelic and hypnotic genres are explored. Here we find traces of free jazz, space jazz, psychedelic rock, and the Egyptian traditional genre Mouled used in religious ceremonies where the goal is to achieve a trance. The band's two regular members Raed Yassin (keyboard, laptop, electronics, vocals) and Paed Conca (clarinet, electric bass, electronics), have an extremely varied background, from concept art to prog rock. Their latest release on Morphine Records was quickly hailed by music media and dominated several year-end lists.
