Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze

In 2011, a 75-year-old Georgian woman went scavenging for copper in the forest near her home. She accidentally sliced through an underground fibre-optic cable, and cut off the internet connection for Georgia and neighbouring Armenia. In Gagoshidze’s video, we meet the woman responsible for the incident, who barely understands what the internet is or why she potentially faces a criminal sentence. The film not only reveals the physical vulnerability of the digital sphere, but gives voice to those left behind in a world increasingly dependent on the web.

Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze (b. 1983 USSR/Georgia, based in Berlin, Germany) is an artist and filmmaker. He studied Experimental Film and New Media under Hito Steyerl at the University of Arts Berlin. His work centres around the moving image: the political aspects of its production and its sociopolitical contexts.
