How are we using AI?
In New Snow, we are using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse the drawings you create and find the closest match from our collection of Edvard Munch's sketches.
This process is powered by two small, open-source AI models. One model identifies patterns in your artwork and compares them to Munch’s sketches, while the other generates short descriptions of your drawing to improve the accuracy of the match.
To make this possible, our technology partner, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has developed new methods for cleansing and transforming data. They have also created a unique multi-modal algorithm that refines the drawing search results by balancing relevance and diversity, taking into account factors such as colour, texture, and shading.
All Munch’s sketches are securely stored on the Cloud, and the application runs on servers hosted in the Norway East region. We chose small models, because they are efficient, lightweight, and require fewer resources to run compared to large models, making them ideal for this kind of application. This ensures your drawings are processed quickly and securely without the need for extensive computational power or storage.
Your privacy is our priority: we do not store your drawings, and they are never used to train or improve the AI. This means your creations remain completely yours.
AI at MUNCH
MUNCH is working with AI to explore how this technology can enhance the management, research and accessibility of our collections. AI offers the opportunity to uncover hidden connections, strengthen conservation efforts, and develop new ways to make art more relevant, accessible and engaging for visitors.
