Ludvig Karsten (1876–1926) lived at the same time as Edvard Munch and was fascinated by the interplay of colours. He painted motifs typical of the period, such as landscape, nudes, interiors, still life, portraits and self-portraits. His paintings are characterised by layer upon layer of paint, scrapings and patched canvases.

In person, Karsten was impulsive and headstrong; he worked fast and had a combative temperament. He travelled a great deal, had a wide network of contacts, and was socially-engaged. The exhibition will provide a close encounter with Karsten’s work and demonstrate the sheer breadth of his artistic output.

The Stenersen collection contains several key works by Ludvig Karsten, and in addition to these, the exhibition will include works loaned from other collections.
