Painting Love Stories – a seminar with Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas wants to paint modern love stories. When she first saw Edvard Munch's litograph series Alpha and Omega at the Munch Museum in 1981, she discovered he was doing just that, many years before her. Curating the exhibition Moonrise. Marlene Dumas & Edvard Munch, she has studied significant portions of the Munch Museum's collection, and assembled what she calls "a love story about tenderness, passion and agony".

In this seminar, Dumas will talk about her affinity for Munch’s art, and show how they both have used photography as a source of inspiration. She will also explain how she used film stills as an inspiration for the works in the Venus & Adonis series, which are displayed in the exhibition. Co-curator at the Munch Museum, Trine Otte Bak Nielsen, will describe what it is about Munch and Dumas that made her fall for their art. Karsten Meinich, editor of the film magazine Montages, will discuss memorable love stories from the history of film.

Marlene Dumas is renowned for her expressive paintings, and has been the subject of solo exhibitions at major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. She is the curator of the exhibition Moonrise. Marlene Dumas & Edvard Munch, in which she shows us art by Munch and René Daniëls in dialogue with her own works.

Karsten Meinich is the editor of the film magazine Montages. As a film editor, he has worked on projects such as Natt til 17. and Unge lovende.

Trine Otte Bak Nielsen is a curator at the Munch Museum, and co-curator of the exhibition Moonrise. Marlene Dumas & Edvard Munch.
