XTREME

The aim of XTREME  is to redefine how audiences experience and engage with artists and performers of all kinds.

XTREME is a new mixed reality (MR) project for arts and culture. Unlike virtual reality (VR), which replaces reality, MR expands it by combining digital  and real-world elements. The aim of XTREME  is to redefine how audiences experience and engage with artists and performers of all kinds, via a narrative journey that fuses music, poetry, objects and visuals.

MUNCH is one of 14 European partners in XTREME. As part of the project, MUNCH has engaged two artists – one musician and one  transdisciplinary artist (names to be announced) – to create prototype mixed-reality experiences, both within and outside the museum. Blending music, visual art, and performative elements, these experiences are designed for young adults, developed in collaboration with MUNCH Ung and young people in Oslo. It is one of the many ways MUNCH is exploring new ways for audiences to engage with art while also enhancing accessibility for a diverse audience.

By blending the virtual and physical, XTREME enables people to come together and enjoy a variety of mixed reality experiences, overcoming the most common barriers such as their geographic location or accessibility issues. The ambition with this project is to develop a human-centred MR environment, broadening access to art and music.

XTREME is an EU-funded project as part of Horizon Europe.
